On the afternoon of November 24, Fiona Hawkshaw (Lu Fenna), Consul and Trade Commissioner at the Consulate General of Canada in Shanghai; Wenyan Yang, Trade Commissioner; and Xinying Lou, Director of the Hangzhou Representative Office of Canada Business Corporation, visited Zoland Animation, a leading animation enterprise based in the industrial zone, for a research visit and discussion on the development of the animation industry and international cooperation. Yuliang Sheng, General Manager of Zoland Animation, welcomed the delegation. Hui Chen, Director of the Secretariat Office of the Hangzhou Animation and Game Association, also attended the meeting.

In the colloquium, Fiona Hawkshaw first introduced their intention. She noted that she had noticed Zoland Animation’s booth at MIPCOM 2023 in October 2023. This visit was also aimed at exploring potential opportunities for cooperation. She believed that the two sides could organise some dual activities involving both “going global” and “bringing in”. In the future, she hoped to gain a deeper understanding of the needs of the Chinese animation market through collaboration with Zoland Animation and the Hangzhou Animation and Game Association, and promote exchanges and cooperation between Chinese and Canadian animation companies and industries.

As the representative of Zoland Animation and the Hangzhou Animation and Game Association, Yuliang Shen, General Manager of Zoland Animation, warmly welcomed Fiona Hawkshaw and her delegation and introduced the basics of Hangzhou’s animation industry, highlighting that Zoland Animation has participated in MIPCOM since 2005 and has focused on global market expansion. He also reviewed Zoland Animation’s “going global” by addressing issues including exhibition participation, IP content, digital platforms, export performance and exchanges with the Canadian animation industry. According to Shen, there are sufficient cooperation opportunities in co-production, human resource development, and global market development. Digital technologies have overcome geographical barriers and language communication challenges. Relying on social organisations such as the Hangzhou Animation and Game Association, along with international platforms including the Zhejiang Digital Culture International Cooperation Zone and the China International Cartoon & Animation Festival, the two sides can enhance exchanges between Chinese and Canadian enterprises, expand and deepen their presence in international markets, and continuously explore new frontiers for global cooperation.
